Westlawn Gardens demonstrates that healthy, sustainable neighborhood design isn’t limited to wealthy zip codes and hipster havens. In fact, this northwest side neighborhood has been “LEED”ing the way, having been transformed from a distressed public housing development into the world’s highest-rated neighborhood on the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification scale in 2013. Developed through a comprehensive community planning process, Westlawn Gardens continues to earn recognition, including the American Planning Association’s 2018 HUD Secretary’s Opportunity & Empowerment Award, one of the highest honors in the planning profession. Tour highlights will include Milwaukee’s first LEED Platinum-certified home; the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center; one of the nation’s first vending libraries (a standalone branch of the Milwaukee Public Library system); “Healthy Homes” designed for people with respiratory illnesses; a vast array of beautifully integrated storm water retention features; parks, playgrounds and walking trails; and a 3/4 acre community garden open to all. The tour, which is a repeat of a popular Jane’s Walk MKE tour offered in May, will end with a discussion about how Westlawn Gardens is providing a foundation for the continued transformation of the surrounding neighborhood through the Choice Neighborhood Initiative.
